Four folk from Polis Animal Rescue took a trip to Kyrenia for a long weekend in March and included a visit to the Animal Shelter there to deliver a donation of much needed food from our Group. June, Barry, Cynthia and Chris were made very welcome by the volunteers there who said a big ‘Thank You’ to those who have provided donations of much needed food. (Don’t worry the animals in the Polis area aren’t going short, they are of course our top priority.) The Kyrenia shelter is in a dramatic location just below ‘five finger mountain’ and at present houses around 250 dogs and 50 cats. Until recently, the shelter was given the leftover food scraps from the local army barracks. Volunteers would collect it in a truck and then sort through it to remove all the toothpicks, paper serviettes etc. before feeding it to the animals. What a fun job! Unfortunately, for security reasons, they’re not allowed into the barracks any more so they now rely only on donations to buy the animals’ food. They are a dedicated group working very hard to help needy animals, so if anyone is visiting Kyrenia and would like to donate a bag or three of dried dog or cat food, give Chris a call on 99980646 for directions on how to find it. Visitors are always welcome and you can find out more from their web site http://www.kyreniaanimalrescue.org/ * THE FRENCH GOURMET NIGHT at the Archontariki Restaurant was a great success. Many thanks to Mario and Charis for serving an excellent meal in a very pleasant atmosphere. Also many thanks to June & Tom who came all the way from Nata to entertain us with a lovely selection of French and romantic songs. * At the time of writing there are just a few tickets left for our next event, ‘A Day of Wine & Roses’. This will be a coach trip to the village of Agros to see the famous roses in bloom and to visit the factory where rose products (including marmalade!) are made.. We return via Omodos with an opportunity to visit a winery there. The cost is 20 euros and the coach leave Polis at 8 a.m. on Saturday 9th May. Contact Colin on 26322495 to reserve a seat. * COME AND VISIT our stall at the next Polis Weekend Market. There are always bargains to be had. If you have articles to donate for the stall, i.e. books, clothing, bric a brac etc. please ring Basia on 99188547 * BOULES are played every Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Argaka picnic site. Just 2 euro to play, no experience needed and boules provided if you don’t have your own. Phone Sue on 96537205 * Plans for a COUNTRY AND WESTERN ‘HO- DOWN’ in June are under way. Watch this space for more info. * A NEW COLLECTING POINT for food donations is now at ‘Shampooch’ just down the road opposite E & S or coming from Polis square, down past the Internet Café and it’s on your left. You can of course still leave you donations of dried food at Holitec (Nr. Agios Therisos tavern), Prodromi, and at Roberts supermarket in Latchi. Many thanks * TRAP, NEUTER AND RELEASE; please contact June on 99205752 for cat and kitten matters.
